Too Many Lanes for the New Roads in Northern Slovakia? Experts Warn About the D3 Highway

November 11, 2024

For many years, the Kysuce region has been waiting for the completion of the entire D3 motorway, including the second tube of the Horelica tunnel, which will expand Slovakia's motorway network. The construction will be costly, with approximately 1.3 billion euros needed, but fortunately, the majority of the costs will be covered by EU funds. Finally, the procurement processes have begun, with the latest procurement process initiated for the section between Kysucké Nové Mesto and Osčadnica. Earlier this year, a tender was announced for the completion of the segment between Oščadnica and Čadca, Bukov. According to the state's plans, six lanes will be available for the traffic currently using the I/11 road, where approximately 25,000 vehicles travel daily. The D3 motorway will have four lanes and will be complemented by two additional lanes on the newly constructed first-class road, built partly in place of the existing road surfaces.

The Financial Control Office believes that so many traffic lanes are unnecessary. Moreover, there is a risk that travellers on the first-class road might avoid the motorway due to the e-vignette fees. Therefore, analysts have suggested constructing a two-lane so-called half-profile motorway, or simply developing the motorway without building a new first-class road. They proposed that widening the existing road might be sufficient. The Financial Control Office did not consider the width of the new first-class road appropriate, recommending a width of only 7.5 meters instead of the proposed 9.5 meters, as they believe such a category of road is unnecessary if the D3 motorway is built.
