To use Bulgaria's toll roads, you must purchase an electronic e-vignette (e-vignette) before using the toll sections.
The vignette is not only mandatory on motorways: it is also required on the toll sections of the republican road network outside built-up areas, including class I and class II main roads. Only class III roads, municipal roads and urban streets are free of charge.
The toll obligation applies to vehicles with at least four wheels and a maximum permissible weight of under 3.5 tonnes: passenger cars, minibuses and caravans. A category M1 motorhome requires an e-vignette according to its registration certificate, regardless of its gross weight. Motorcycles and vehicles with fewer than four wheels are exempt.
* Lorries and buses over 3.5 tonnes do not purchase a vignette, but pay a toll proportional to the distance travelled, which must be settled via an on-board unit or a data service provider.
The e-vignette is available for six periods of validity:
* If a vehicle under 3.5 tonnes tows a trailer (a utility trailer or caravan) and the combined maximum permissible weight of the combination exceeds 3.5 tonnes, a separate vignette must be purchased for the trailer – regardless of the number of the trailer's axles. If the combined weight of the combination remains under 3.5 tonnes, no vignette is required for the trailer.
The toll calculation is displayed by the system after the vehicle and journey details have been entered.
Payment of the road use entitlement fee is made online. Registering the vehicle takes only a few minutes. The following data are required:
When placing the order (during vehicle registration), you must enter the vehicle's registration number and the country in which the vehicle is registered, then select the start date and the duration of the vignette's validity period. The start of validity may be set up to 30 days in advance.
The system requires an e-mail address and a mobile phone number for contact purposes. The mobile phone number is required because the link to the confirmation is also sent by SMS, thereby ensuring that the user receives the confirmation even if delivery of the e-mail is obstructed for any reason.
Upon successful payment, the system sends a receipt and a QR™ SMS code containing the vehicle's identification data and the validity period of the purchased e-vignette.
⛔ Fines
The legislation (чл. 179, чл. 187a.) sets out in detail the fines that may be expected if someone uses the toll road network without valid payment:
Here, via the registration portal, the required proof of toll payment can be obtained online in just a few minutes, and it is recorded in the official database of the electronic toll collection system operated by the Road Infrastructure Agency (Агенция „Пътна инфраструктура").
Components of the registration service
With us, the e-vignette is available together with the Comfortia and Auxil services; their fee is included in the registration fee.
Under Comfortia – if you mistyped your details when placing the order – we will change the licence plate number, the country of registration, the vehicle category, the destination country or the start date of validity free of charge on one occasion; the system checks for obvious typing errors automatically and, if necessary, manually as well. The order may be cancelled and the full amount refunded no later than 24 hours before the start of validity, with the exception of the annual e-vignette.
Under Auxil – should you receive a fine for a reason related to your order – we provide legal assistance within 180 days of the order: we act as your authorised representative before the competent authority, submit an appeal, and initiate a payment deferral or a reduction on equitable grounds. In justified cases we may also reimburse the amount of the fine, up to a maximum of EUR 300.
Further details can be found in sections 4.1 and 4.2 of the General Terms and Conditions.
