To use Slovenian motorways, you need to purchase an electronic vignette (e-vignette) before using the toll-liable sections.
Motorway and expressway sections may only be used upon payment of a toll, while secondary roads and main roads can be used free of charge. As of 1 January 2026, the coastal expressway, i.e. the H5 and H6 sections between Škofije and Izola, has been reclassified as a main road, so an e-vignette is no longer required there for passenger cars.
The toll obligation applies to vehicles with a maximum permissible laden mass of less than 3,500 kg, according to toll classes: Class 1 – single-track vehicles, such as motorcycles (track width of up to 50 cm); Class 2A – two-track vehicles not exceeding 3,500 kg with a height of less than 1.3 metres measured above the front axle (most passenger cars, minibuses, off-road vehicles, SUVs and pickups), as well as motorhomes regardless of their height; Class 2B – two-track vehicles not exceeding 3,500 kg with a height of more than 1.3 metres measured above the front axle (most multi-purpose vehicles and vans).
* Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes (lorries, buses, heavy goods vehicles) do not purchase a vignette: they are subject to the distance-based DarsGo toll, using an on-board unit.
The e-vignette is available in the following types:
* Trailers (trailers, caravans) are not subject to a vignette: all three toll classes are defined for the vehicle "with or without a trailer", therefore the towing vehicle's vignette is also valid for the combination.
* Selecting the correct toll class is the buyer's responsibility: in the case of an incorrect toll class, the toll is not deemed to have been paid. The boundary between 2A and 2B is a height of 1.3 metres above the front axle; in case of doubt, the official list of measured vehicles provides guidance.
* The start of validity may be set up to 30 days in advance, however, an activated e-vignette cannot be transferred to another vehicle.
The toll calculation is displayed by the system after the vehicle and journey details have been entered.
Payment of the fee for the right to use the road is made online. Registering the vehicle takes only a few minutes. The following data are required:
When placing the order (during vehicle registration), you must provide the vehicle's registration number and the country in which the vehicle is registered, then select the start and duration of the validity period of the vignette type.
The system requests an email address and a mobile phone number for contact purposes. Providing a mobile phone number is necessary because the link to the confirmation is also sent by SMS, thus ensuring that the user receives the confirmation even if the delivery of the email is hindered for any reason.
Upon successful payment, the system sends a receipt and a QR™ SMS code containing the vehicle's identification data and the validity period of the purchased e-vignette.
⛔ Fines
The legislation (Zakon o cestninjenju) sets out in detail the fines that can be expected if someone enters a toll-liable motorway or expressway without valid payment of the toll:
Here, through the registration portal, the required proof of toll payment can be obtained online in just a few minutes, and it is recorded in the official database of DARS – Družba za avtoceste v Republiki Sloveniji d.d.
