The construction of the second phase of the M49 expressway can commence following the announcement of the tender results in the EU public procurement notice. The 17.6-kilometer section of the road will be executed by Duna Aszfalt, and the total investment cost is 141.9 billion forints. This section will establish a connection between the Romanian border and the M3 motorway, reports Magyar Építők.
The planning and construction of the section between Ököritófülpös and Csenger, as well as the connected Kocsord maintenance unit, will also be carried out by Duna Aszfalt Út és Mélyépítő Zrt. The investment by the Ministry of Construction and Transport will connect the M3 motorway with the Romanian border at Csenger, thereby ensuring connectivity between the M49 expressway and Satu Mare and the Partium region. In the first phase, the 28.15-kilometer road section between the M3 and Ököritófülpös will be built, which partly includes the construction of a new Kraszna bridge. On the Romanian side, as a continuation of the M49, an 11-kilometer section between Óvári and Satu Mare is being constructed, with the tender result announced this January.
On the second 17.6-kilometer section of the expressway, a four-lane road is being built, with a total cost of 141.9 billion forints. The project also includes the construction of a dual-sided axle weight measuring station and a road border crossing at the Hungarian-Romanian border. The M49 will create a new 45-kilometer-long transportation link between Nyíregyháza and the Romanian border, as well as Satu Mare. The work began at the start of 2023 under the leadership of Duna Aszfalt, in two phases. Construction is currently ongoing on the longer 28.15-kilometer section leading to Ököritófülpös, with completion promised by the Ministry of Construction and Transport for autumn 2026.
