Today, Romania has taken a step towards the first motorway crossing through the Carpathians.
March 04, 2025
Romania took a step closer today to crossing the Carpathians with its first highway. At noon, the tunnel drilling was completed on the section between Tigveni and Curtea de Argeş on the Sibiu-Piteşti A1 highway. This section of the road, running beneath the Momâia hill, will consist of two tunnels each 1.35 km long and a two-lane roadway.
The tunnel in the opposite direction is also nearing completion, announced Ionel Scrioșteanu, State Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, who reported an infrastructure novelty:
Romania already has a tunnel for traffic, but it was built using the "cut-and-cover" method, which meant completely stripping the hill and creating a concrete structure. In this case, however, they dug into the interior of the hill. Construction is approximately four and a half months ahead of schedule, with the second tunnel expected to be completed around April 15. The other section is already in an advanced state and is expected to open by the end of May, allowing highway travel all the way from Bucharest to Curtea de Argeş.
Ionel Scrioșteanu also announced that the last 12-kilometer section of the Craiova-Piteşti expressway, providing a connection to the A1 highway, is expected to be completed within three to four months.
