To use Hungary's motorways, you must purchase an electronic e-vignette (e-vignette) before entering the toll section.
Most motorways and expressways are subject to tolls, while main roads and secondary roads can be used free of charge. Not every road marked with an "M" is subject to tolls, so before setting off it is worth checking whether the planned route includes any toll section.
The toll payment obligation is determined by toll categories:
- D1 – passenger cars with a maximum permissible gross weight of 3.5 tonnes and capable of carrying no more than 7 persons, together with their trailers
- D2 – lorries up to 3.5 tonnes, as well as vehicles capable of carrying more than 7 persons
- U – trailers towed by a vehicle in toll category D2
* Lorries over 3.5 tonnes and buses do not purchase an e-vignette; they pay through the distance-based toll system (HU-GO).
Vignette types
The e-vignette is available in the following types:
- Daily (1-day) e-vignette – valid on the selected calendar day between 0:00 and 24:00
- Weekly (10-day) e-vignette – valid on the start date and for the following 9 calendar days
- Monthly e-vignette – valid from the start date until 24:00 on the same day of the following month
- Annual national e-vignette – valid from 1 January of the current year, or in the case of a purchase during the year from the time of purchase, until 24:00 on 31 January of the following year
- Annual county e-vignette – valid for the toll sections of the given county and up to the first junction beyond the county border; several county vignettes may be used together
- Annual M1 regional e-vignette – valid for the entire toll network of Pest, Fejér, Komárom-Esztergom and Győr-Moson-Sopron counties
* No separate vignette is required for a trailer (utility trailer, caravan) towed by a passenger car in toll category D1. A separate vignette in toll category U is only required if the towing vehicle belongs to toll category D2.
The toll calculation is displayed by the system once the vehicle and journey details have been entered.
ℹ️ Online purchase and required data
Payment of the road use authorisation fee takes place online. Registering the vehicle takes only a few minutes. The following data are required:
- Licence plate number
- Country code (nationality mark)
- E-mail address
- Mobile phone number
When placing an order, you must provide the vehicle's licence plate number and the country of registration, then select the start and duration of validity.
The system requests an e-mail address and a mobile phone number for contact purposes. Providing a mobile phone number is necessary because the link to the certificate is also sent by SMS, thus ensuring that the user receives the certificate even if delivery of the e-mail is prevented for any reason.
Upon successful payment, the system sends a receipt and a QR™ SMS code containing the vehicle's identification data and the validity period of the purchased authorisation.
⛔ Surcharges
The legislation (Act LXVII of 2013 and ITM Decree No. 45/2020 (XI. 28.)) sets out in detail what surcharges can be expected if someone enters a toll road without valid payment of the toll:
- Basic surcharge, if paid within 60 days: HUF 27,790
- Increased surcharge, if paid after 60 days: HUF 95,730
- Surcharge difference in case of an incorrect toll category: HUF 15,530 within 60 days, HUF 49,190 after 60 days
- Only one surcharge may be imposed for the same licence plate within one calendar day.
- Checks are carried out by fixed cameras, mobile toll enforcement units and mobile units authorised to stop vehicles.
Here, through the registration portal, the required proof of toll payment can be obtained online in just a few minutes, and it is recorded in the official Hungarian toll register.
Components of the registration service
The Hungarian e-vignette can be purchased as part of the Optimum package. It includes: modification of a mistyped licence plate number and of the destination country within 60 days of purchase, cancellation and full refund at least 24 hours before the start of the validity period (except for the annual e-vignette), as well as SMS notification of the order and the expiry.
Further details can be found in section 4.1.1 of the General Terms and Conditions.
