The country's largest road renovation program is being implemented based on a coordinated plan.
August 29, 2024
The Development Coordination Director of Magyar Concession Infrastructure Development Ltd. (MKIF Zrt.), Fruzsina Benedek, provided a detailed insight into the complexity of the comprehensive upgrading program for the 1237-kilometer expressway network. Under the contract with the Hungarian state, MKIF Zrt. is responsible for both operation and maintenance, as well as the planning and construction of new sections. The diversity of tasks includes everything from road inspection, vegetation management, and drainage system cleaning to larger development and construction tasks.
Fruzsina Benedek emphasized that the annual Major Maintenance Program is planned and coordinated with the state in advance each year, taking into consideration the condition of the road network and the need for modernization and equal service levels. The necessity of an iterative planning process is well demonstrated by the need to develop a program that meets the requirements of all aspects and stakeholders involved.
A significant task for MKIF Zrt. is the completion of the upgrading work due by August 31, 2025, on road sections that do not meet the prescribed requirements. Meanwhile, alongside continuous development and operational work, quality assurance also receives attention, representing processes that may be less visible but are important.
In its operations, MKIF Zrt. considers weather conditions, events, and sporting events, which may affect work scheduling. Moreover, the availability of appropriate tools and capacities, as well as transportation opportunities, are decisive factors in planning. The proper establishment and maintenance of detours are also crucial to ensure safe traffic at construction sites.
To ensure that road renovation programs are effective, MKIF Zrt. conducts regular measurements and analyses concerning road conditions and travel comfort. Continuous data collection by road inspectors and the use of an online database also help ensure that interventions occur at the necessary place and time.
During road construction and renovation works, one of MKIF Zrt.'s biggest motivations is participating in such a large-scale and complex project that is outstanding not only for Hungary but also for the whole of Europe. Nonetheless, societal expectations and criticisms are part of their daily activities, among which there are also appreciative and constructive feedbacks.
