Not for excessive highway expansion

Not for excessive highway expansion

October 09, 2024

In recent years, the debate over the expansion of highways in Switzerland has increasingly come into focus. Many people are raising their voices against the continuous widening and further construction of roads. On November 24, we will vote on one of the country's largest highway expansion projects in recent years. Major transportation routes could become six-to-eight-lane monstrosity roads. As a result, more cars, increased noise, greater air pollution, and even more asphalt will symbolize the future – which, however, may come at the expense of quality of life and the environment. IG Wild beim Wild urges a complete rejection of the plan. Here are some arguments against highway expansion:

1. Environmental Impact The expansion of highways increases environmental pollution. The increased traffic raises noise and air pollution, which not only degrades the quality of life of those living there but also has an adverse effect on the environment. 2. Climate Change We must intensify the fight against climate change and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Expanding highways encourages vehicular traffic, which contradicts the government's climate goals. 3. Paving Over Natural Areas Every highway expansion means further paving of areas that are important for nature and biodiversity. This can lead to a loss of habitats for animal and plant species, negatively impacting the ecosystem. 4. Supporting Sustainable Transportation Instead of building highways, focus should be on supporting sustainable modes of transportation. Investing in expanding public transport options and developing bike paths is important to bring about real changes in mobility.

5. Utilizing Alternatives There are already innovative approaches to reduce traffic without the need to build new highways. These include making work schedules more flexible, models of working from home, and car-sharing programs. These alternatives should be better supported and developed. Summary
